When it comes to choosing your high definition CCTV camera then there are two major formats in the market; IP ( Internet Protocol ) Camera format and TVI ( Transport Video Interface ) format. Both have their positives and negatives though both will deliver much the same end user experience and excellent picture results.
IP Cameras have been fast developing over the past few years. Their prices have come down and now they stand as the bench mark camera format found in the CCTV market. Their popularity has become dominant though this does not mean they don’t some ‘Achilles Heels’ within their features. Contrary to what some may think, multiple IP cameras can’t just be added easily to existing networks. A proper IP camera installation will usually require it’s own network infrastructure due to the sheer volume of video data flowing across it and the power demands via PoE required for the cameras.
- Adaptable across all I.P. networks.
- More suitable to large scale installations; ie_ high rise.
- Greater variety of specialist camera types
- Greater implementation for video analytics
- Easier to power cameras using PoE ( Power Over Ethernet )
- More prone to technical I.P. setup and maintenance issues.
- More prone to voltage drop and hence shorter cabling distances per camera.
- Prone to more ‘digital noise’ or grain effect when limited lighting is available.
- More expensive than TVI equivalent.
- Cannot be retro fitted to a coaxial wired system.
- More prone to live image latency.
- Multiple power backup and network infrastructure points required.
- Large variety of camera management software in the market making maintenance sometimes difficult.
TVI cameras are the Saviour for analogue within a high definition CCTV realm. Manufacturers are still prepared to invest within this technology and today new high end TVI products are still being released into the market. TVI has managed to form its rock bed based mostly on price point but now is staying around for multiple reasons. Since hybrid DVR’s have been introduced TVI has been able to match the IP camera user experience and in some ways do better.
- Can be retro-fitted to older coaxial installations.
- Stable images less prone to interference over shielded coax.
- Can also be wired over Cat5/6 cabling.
- Less prone to signal loss and voltage drop over longer distances ( via coax ).
- Not prone to I.P. environment changes ( ie Does not need an IP address to work )
- No latency issues for live viewing.
- Excellent night vision results with low level lighting.
- More attractive price point than for equivalent IP camera.
- Exact same user experience as IP Camera systems.
- Cheaper to setup and maintain than IP Camera Systems.
- Harder to implement cabling over multi story or large scale.
- Coaxial+Power cabling slightly more expensive.
- Separate power supply to cameras required.
- Less variety in specialist camera types.
- Less development of high end video analytics.
Ultimately the choice is obviously yours between IP and TVI cameras. Just don’t get too hell bent on which one you choose as they both offer excellent results and the user experience is almost exactly the same.
